Trovare la mia voce: I miei primi 6 mesi all’YMCA Siderno

Se devo definire la mia esperienza di volontariato all’YMCA Siderno, direi che era una sfida per trovare la mia voce, sia letteralmente che in senso figurativo.

 

Dai primi giorni a Siderno mi sono trovata faccia a faccia con le difficoltà di comunicazione. Circondata da poche persone che parlano inglese, tante cose semplici, come ad esempio ordinare una pizza, mi sembravano spaventose. Non capire gli scherzi e non essere capita nell’esprimere i miei pensieri in italiano hanno portato molti momenti di frustrazione e solitudine. Invece, col tempo ho imparato sempre più parole. Piano piano ho cominciato a capire le conversazioni, ero capace ad organizzare diversi tipi di attività e mi sono inscritta in un gruppo di lettura. Grazie ai bambini a cui sto insegnando a giocare a basket ho superato la mia paura di parlare in Italiano.

 

Il mio amore e apprezzamento verso la comunità locale cresceva insieme con le mie abilità linguistiche. La gioia, i sorrisi birichini e la curiosità inesorabile dei bambini durante le attività festive mi hanno insegnato l’importanza dell’energia positiva, della libertà e del gioco. Quando mi sono trovata a dover fare l’istruttrice ho cominciato ad apprezzare tutti gli istruttori, i professori, e i coach i quali mi hanno sostenuto durante il mio viaggio. Come allenatrice, ho imparato ad abbracciare l’incertezza e fare attenzione all’umore e all’energia delle persone che mi circondano. O almeno, credo questo durante i giorni facili. Invece, ci sono giorni che chiedo pazienza di Dio 🙂

 

Oltretutto, durante questi 7 mesi sono cresciuta come persona creativa. Non solo ho praticato le mie abilità di grafica, ma ho anche avuto l’opportunità di condividere le mie passioni e interessi durante le diverse attività.

Avere la libertà di creare attività di leadership, piani di allenamenti e giochi educativi, mi ha insegnato esprimere la mia creatività e mi ha fatto ricordare di divertirmi e trovare connessione tra i miei diversi interessi. Sono grata di avere la fiducia, il supporto dello staff, dei bambini e dei genitori.

 

Per quanto riguarda i prossimi mesi, voglio accumulare bellissimi ricordi e continuare ad imparare, giocare, sorridere e servire la comunità locale al meglio possibile. Sono motivata a continuare il nostro progetto di Sustainable Saturday e guardo avanti alle nuove sfide, opportunità per trovare la mia voce.

If I had to describe my volunteering experience at the YMCA, I would say it was a challenge to find my own voice both literally and figuratively.

 

From the very first moment in Siderno, I was challenged by communication. Surrounded by only a few people who spoke English, even simple tasks, such as ordering a pizza, seemed daunting. Not understanding jokes and not being able to express myself in Italian often brought frustration and dissatisfaction. But as time flew, more and more expressions and words have been anchored in my mind. Slowly, I started to follow and hold conversations, I was able to hold activities, and I even joined an Italian book club. The children I shared my knowledge with became my best language tutors.

 

My linguistic abilities grew with the love and appreciation towards the local community. The laughter of children during the summer activities, the mischievous young smiles and depthless curiosity during basketball practice, taught me lifelong lessons about freedom, joy and energy. Finding myself in the position of an educator, brought me so much respect and appreciation for my teachers and coaches who supported me along my journey. As a coach, I also learned to embrace change and to pay attention to the general mood and energy of the people around me. At least this is what I say to myself on the better days. Yes, there are still days when I pray for enough patience. 🙂

 

During these last seven months, I also grew as a creative. Not only did I improve my skills in graphic design and communication, but I had a wonderful opportunity to share my passions and background through various activities. Having the freedom to create leadership activities, practice plans and educational games, taught me about the importance of creative freedom, play and the cohesion between different kinds of interests.  I am incredibly grateful for the trust and the opportunity and support that the YMCA provided.

 

As for the next four months, I want to carve every single beautiful memory in the palette of my brain. I want to learn, play, laugh and serve the community the best I can. I am excited to continue our Sustainable Saturday Project and I am looking forward to new challenges and opportunities to find my own voice.
